Sydney joins the Majors

The Sydney Marathon became a World Marathon Major in 2025 - the first in the southern hemisphere - with a course over the Harbour Bridge and a finish by the Opera House. Melbourne, the Gold Coast and Perth carry the rest of the big-city calendar.

Racing upside down

The Australian season is the northern hemisphere's mirror: the big races cluster in the southern winter, May through October, when temperatures are kind. For European and American runners, that makes Australia the perfect place to keep a marathon year alive through the northern summer.
